How to Set Up Remote Desktop (RDP) on Windows VPS from SkyITVPS
After renting a Windows VPS server, the first thing you need to do is set up a Remote Desktop (RDP) connection. This will allow you to manage the server as if you were sitting at a regular computer. In this article, we will walk you through how to set up RDP on a VPS from SkyITVPS.
SkyITVPS: All our Windows VPS servers come with pre-configured RDP. All you have to do is connect!
Step 1: Obtain connection details
After creating a VPS in your SkyITVPS control panel, you will receive an email with the following details:
- 🌐 Server IP address (e.g., 185.xxx.xxx.xxx)
- 👤 Username (usually
Administrator) - 🔑 Password (system-generated)
- 🔌 RDP port (standard 3389, or changed for security)
Step 2: Connect via RDP on Windows
- Press
Win + Ron your computer - Type
mstscand press Enter - In the "Computer" field, enter the server IP address:
185.xxx.xxx.xxx - Click "Connect"
- Enter your username and password
- Confirm the connection (certificate)
Step 3: Connect via RDP on macOS
- Download Microsoft Remote Desktop from the App Store
- Open the app and click "Add PC"
- Enter the server IP address
- Add your credentials (username and password)
- Click "Save" and connect
Step 4: Connect via RDP on Linux
- Install a client:
sudo apt install remmina(for Ubuntu) - Open Remmina and create a new RDP connection
- Enter the IP address, username, and password
- Connect
Step 5: RDP Security Settings (Recommended!)
To protect your server, we recommend the following actions:
- 🔐 Change the default RDP port (see our blog for instructions)
- 🔑 Set a strong password (minimum 12 characters, letters + numbers + symbols)
- 🛡 Enable Windows Firewall and restrict access by IP
- 👤 Create a separate user instead of Administrator
- 🔒 Enable Network Level Authentication (NLA)
Step 6: Troubleshooting common issues
- ❌ Connection error → check if "Remote Desktop Services" is running
- ❌ Incorrect password → reset password in control panel
- ❌ RDP port blocked → check firewall rules
- ❌ Slow performance → reduce Color depth to 16 bit
SkyITVPS Tip: For maximum security, use a VPN before connecting via RDP. Or order our "Private Network" service for secure server-to-server access.
After completing these steps, you can comfortably work on your Windows VPS from SkyITVPS from anywhere in the world!
